Error
Description
VAM-14 in the 1898-S Morgan Dollar series (III2 10 C3l: Doubled 1, Die Scratch) shows the 1 in the date doubled below and on the left side of the upper crossbar, with the left edge of the 1 base positioned over the right edge of the third denticle from the neck point. The reverse C3l die shows the S mintmark tilted slightly to the right, accompanied by a fine horizontal die scratch above the eagle's right shoulder — the die scratch that forms part of the variety's designation. An emission sequence of Reverse: 21, 14 is documented, confirming that VAM-21 preceded VAM-14 on this reverse die. Discovered by Crae Morton in March 2006 and revised in November 2025, VAM-14's attribution has been updated relatively recently, meaning some older documentation may reflect pre-revision parameters. The 1898-S Morgan Dollar was struck in 90% silver at the San Francisco Mint under George T. Morgan's design. The combination of the doubled 1 in the date, the tilted-right S mintmark, and the fine horizontal die scratch above the eagle's shoulder provides a three-element diagnostic suite for attribution.
