1896-P VAM-33

Description

VAM-33 on the 1896 Philadelphia Morgan Dollar was first documented in 2012 and revised in 2019 by Bill Wolverton, catalogued as 33, obverse III2 31, reverse C3d, die pair unknown, with the attribution: Doubled 1, Doubled Left Wreath. The obverse shows the 1 in the date slightly doubled below its upper crossbar — a subtle but confirmable doubling event on the leading digit. The date is positioned at the middle of its normal lateral range. The reverse left wreath shows doubling, adding a reverse diagnostic to complement the obverse date feature. A die marker is present on the obverse: die polishing lines are visible in the TY area of LIBERTY, a localized field treatment that serves as a confirmation marker for this specific die. The 1896 Morgan Dollar was struck in 90% silver at the Philadelphia Mint in one of the series' later years, with production continuing until 1904.
