1896-P VAM-11

Description

Discovered by Oscar Simpson in March 1977 and revised in 2006, this Philadelphia Morgan dollar is cataloged as VAM-11 under the revised classification III2 11 with a C3d reverse, bearing the descriptive title Near Date, Doubled Left Wreath and carrying a rarity rating of 189. The obverse is characterized by a date set further to the left than normal, creating the near date positioning that distinguishes it from standard die placements. The reverse displays doubled middle leaves in the left wreath leaf clusters along with doubled outside leaves of the second cluster from the top, spread toward the rim. Some leaves in the right wreath show slight doubling toward the rim as well, and the ends of the middle arrow feathers are doubled. John Roberts, upon reviewing specimens, stated that this VAM could represent multiple die pairs, suggesting that what is currently cataloged as a single listing may encompass more than one die marriage. Collectors should be attentive to potential die marker differences that might eventually lead to sub-variety designations within the VAM-11 listing.
