1896-P VAM-10

Description

VAM-10 in the 1896-P Morgan Dollar series (III2 10 C3a: Doubled 6, Low Date) shows the 6 doubled just above the top outside of the upper loop as a thin curved segment, with an additional dot visible on the right side of the 6. The date as a whole is set close to the rim — the Low Date positioning that forms part of the variety's designation. The reverse C3a is a normal die. Discovered by Oscar Simpson in January 1977, VAM-10 is among the earlier-documented 1896-P Morgan Dollar varieties, making it a well-established entry in the series reference. The 1896-P Morgan Dollar was struck in 90% silver at the Philadelphia Mint under George T. Morgan's design. Doubling on the 6 alone — specifically the thin curved segment above the upper loop and the dot on the right — combined with the low date set near the rim provides the primary attribution pathway. Under sufficient magnification, the curved secondary segment above the 6's upper loop is the most diagnostic element, visible even on circulated examples with moderate surface detail remaining.
