1896-P VAM-21

Description

Attributed to Ken Heacock with a discovery date of June 2001, the 1896-P VAM-21 is a Doubled 1-6, Near Date variety on the Philadelphia Mint Morgan dollar. The classification is 21 III221 · C3a with an undetermined rarity rating. On the obverse, the 1 in the date is very slightly doubled on the lower surface of the upper crossbar, while the 6 shows slight doubling at the lower inside of the lower loop visible as a thin curved line. Additionally, the date is set further left than normal, earning the Near Date portion of its designation. The reverse carries the standard C3a classification. The subtle nature of the date doubling on this variety requires careful examination under magnification, as the thin curved line inside the 6 and the crossbar doubling on the 1 can be easily overlooked. Philadelphia Mint Morgan dollars of 1896 had a relatively modest mintage compared to some years in the series, and the Near Date positioning adds a secondary diagnostic that helps confirm attribution beyond the doubling alone. =1896-P VAM-21 Doubled 1-6, Near Date= Discovered by Ken Heacock, June 2001.
