1896-P VAM-24
Error
Description
Discovered by Mark Kimpton in February 2006, 1896-P VAM-24 is catalogued as 24 III211 · C3c — Near Date, Doubled Reverse Legend — with an R-5 or lower rarity rating, placing known examples at under 100. The obverse III211 shows the date set closer to the bust than normal, with die scratches in the field below OF. The reverse C3c shows doubling on STATES OF AMERICA. The doubling on the reverse legend — spread across three words of the motto — is the signature diagnostic for this die marriage and distinguishes it from Near Date varieties sharing the same obverse die position. The 1896 Philadelphia Morgan dollar was struck in 90% silver; no mintmark appears on P-mint issues, making reverse characteristics essential for complete attribution. Kimpton's 2006 discovery added a documented reverse legend doubled die to the 1896-P census at a rarity level that keeps confirmed examples scarce in the marketplace.
