1891-S VAM-6

Description

Revised in 2011, VAM-6 of the 1891-S Morgan Dollar is classified as 6 (revised) III2 5 - C3a (Doubled 1-91) with a rarity rating of 190. Three digits in the date display doubling, each in a different manner: the left 1 is doubled below the upper crossbar as a short diagonal line, the 9 shows doubling at the top outside of the upper loop, and the right 1 is doubled at the top left outside of the upper crossbar. This variety of multi-digit doubling where each numeral displays displacement at a different point is characteristic of a rotational hub misalignment. The 1891-S represents the penultimate year of Morgan Dollar production before the series was suspended in 1904, and San Francisco's output that year was relatively modest. An important attribution note: VAM-6 and VAM-6A share the same obverse die but were paired with different reverse dies, making careful reverse examination essential for correct classification. The "revised" notation in the catalog number reflects updates to the variety's documentation since its original listing, a common occurrence in the VAM reference as new information emerges.
