Error
Description
Holding the prestigious Top 100 Morgan VAM designation, the 1891-S VAM-3.2 ranks among the most important and collectible die varieties in the entire Morgan dollar series. Originally discovered by Leonard Hinckley in February 1974 with further work completed in 2011, it is classified as 3.2 (revised) III2 2 – C3a (Doubled Stars & Eyelid, Near Date). The obverse die (III2 2) reveals doubled left stars towards the rim, along with doubling on the eyelid and eye front, while the date is set further left than normal at the right edge. The C3b reverse carries an S mintmark positioned at the top edge of the normal location, with a faint vertical polishing line running from the wing edge up to below the S in TRUST serving as a key die marker. The original submitter believed the reverse to be the C3c die used on 1891-S VAM-10, and it is at least very close to that die. Top 100 status is reserved for the most significant Morgan and Peace dollar VAMs, and this variety's combination of doubled stars, eyelid doubling, and near date placement fully justifies the elite classification.
