Error
Description
Discovered in December 2024 by Brent Fogelberg, this San Francisco Mint Morgan Dollar is designated VAM-27 under Classification III2 19, C3n, documenting a Slanted Date with a Gouge in Wing. On the obverse, the date sits in a normal lateral position with a slight upward slant, and die markers include lines in the letters of LIBERTY. On the reverse, a somewhat orderly pattern appears in the fields near OF AM and ON UNI, with a gouge through the fourth outer feather in the eagle's left wing. This variety represents an earlier die stage than VAM 5D. DPIS is RH3/LE5. The emission sequence shows the reverse die paired as: 27, 5D, confirming VAM-27 preceded VAM-5D in production. Struck in 90% silver at San Francisco, the 1891-S Morgan Dollar comes from one of the final years of original Morgan Dollar production before the series paused after 1904. Fogelberg's December 2024 discovery demonstrates that new die marriages continue to be identified in the late-date Morgan series.
