1891-CC VAM-6

Description

Discovered by Jeff Oxman in December 1997, this Carson City Morgan dollar is designated VAM-6 with classification III23 and a C3e reverse under the title Doubled Lettering, Near Slanted Date. On the obverse, the date is set further left than normal with a slight slant positioning the second 1 higher than the first. The reverse C3e die carries extensive doubled lettering: all peripheral letters are doubled inside, nearest the coin's center and toward the rim, with AMERICA showing the strongest effect. The IN GOD WE TRUST motto is doubled at the top edge toward the rim, and the right outside edge of the right wreath also exhibits doubling. The CC mintmark is set high with the right C's top almost touching the wreath. Carson City Morgan dollars command a premium across all dates and conditions, and the extensive reverse lettering doubling documented on VAM-6 adds variety value to an already desirable mint origin. The comprehensiveness of the doubled lettering, affecting virtually every peripheral legend element, makes this one of the more broadly doubled reverse dies in the 1891-CC Morgan dollar series.
