Description
A Carson City Mint Morgan Dollar variety, the 1891-CC VAM-5 was discovered by Jay Galst in February 1980 and is classified as Near Date. The die pair is designated 5 III2 2 C3a, plate (177). On the obverse (III2 2), the date is set further left than normal, placing the digits closer to the rim than on standard 1891-CC dies and earning the Near Date classification. The reverse (C3a) represents a standard die pairing. Importantly, the 1891-CC VAM-4 shares its obverse with the 1891-CC VAM-5, meaning the same obverse die was paired with two different reverse dies during production — a relationship that helps researchers reconstruct die usage sequences at the Carson City Mint. Carson City Morgan Dollars are among the most sought-after issues in the entire series, as the Nevada facility's relatively modest output and colorful Old West associations have made the CC mint mark a premium feature for generations of collectors. The 1891 date represents one of the final years of Carson City silver dollar production, with the mint closing in 1893. Silver composition, 90% silver and 10% copper.
