Description

1891-CC VAM-7 Spitting Eagle, Far Date Discovery September 2013 by a cast of several (John Baumgart, Nick Capuano, John Roberts, Gary Voyles) This coin is a Top 100 variety 7 III2 5 • C3c (Spitting Eagle, Far Date) (?) Obverse III2 5 - Date set right of normal position. Heavy die polishing lines in and around Liberty's ear. Raised spike at top of E in LIBERTY. Reverse C3c - CC mint mark tilted left. Left C strongly doubled at top outside and lower left inside. Right C slightly doubled at top outside. die gouge shows below eagle's beak as "spitting eagle". Later die state than [[1891-CC VAM-3, with gouge slightly polished down and inside of 1st C devoid of stray lines. DPIS - ;Emission Sequence :Obverse: :Reverse: Comments: # The [[1891-CC VAM-7 shares it's reverse with the [[1891-CC VAM-3. # While the [[1891-CC VAM-3 is easily the most common 91-CC, initial estimates of the [[1891-CC VAM-7 show that it is rather scarce in comparison. # Can be found in mis-attributed [[1891-CC VAM-3 slabs from all TPG companies. # As of 1-12-2023 the SSDC shows 104 examples of the [[1891-CC VAM-3 registered while the [[1891-CC VAM-7 boasts only 24 (and some of them are suspect).
