Description
Produced at the San Francisco Mint, the 1889 (S) Morgan Dollar is part of the Morgan Dollars 1878-1921 series. With a mintage of 700,000, this is a scarce issue — ranked 2nd of 4 mint variants by mintage, with 2% of production. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a Phrygian cap adorned with wheat and cotton, encircled by stars and the reverse displays an eagle with outstretched wings clutching an olive branch and arrows, surrounded by a wreath. The 1889-CC with a mintage of 350,000 is one of the most popular Carson City Morgan Dollars. San Francisco's storied mint, born of the California Gold Rush, has evolved into the primary producer of U.S. proof coins.
