Description

Removed from the active VAM catalog after being reclassified as identical to VAM-8D2, this 1884 Philadelphia Morgan Dollar variety was originally discovered by Leroy Van Allen in August 2003. The original description documented a far date position on the obverse with a clashed die showing a partial incuse impression of the letters "st" from the reverse word "Trust" in the right hair vee of Liberty's lower hair edge. Die clashes occur when obverse and reverse dies strike each other without a planchet between them, transferring design elements in incuse form. The "st" clash in the hair vee is a well-known diagnostic area on Morgan Dollars, where the reverse motto transfers readily during clashless strikes. The variety was classified under die pair III28 with a C3a reverse before researchers determined it duplicated the characteristics documented under VAM-8D2. Collectors holding specimens previously attributed to VAM-8A should update their attribution to VAM-8D2 for current catalog accuracy. The removal reflects the ongoing refinement process that keeps the VAM reference aligned with verified die identities.
