1884-P VAM-10

Description

Designated die pair 187 and discovered by Martin Field in January 1979, this Philadelphia Mint Morgan Dollar carries the Far Date, Doubled 188 and Stars attribution. The date is set notably further right than normal positioning, and the digits 188 display doubling at the very top outside edges. All left stars and the first two right stars exhibit doubling, along with the letters E through P in the motto, all doubled at the 12 o'clock position. Liberty's lips and chin show slight doubling from the same hub misalignment event. Struck in 90% silver (0.7734 oz ASW), the 1884-P Morgan Dollar had a mintage of approximately 14.1 million pieces. Field's 1979 discovery predates much of the modern VAM photographic documentation, yet the variety's distinctive far-right date placement makes it one of the more immediately recognizable 1884-P die marriages even without magnification. The comprehensive doubling across stars, date, motto, and facial features indicates a substantial rotational or positional misalignment between hub impressions during die preparation, affecting design elements across a wide arc of the obverse from the left star field through the date area.
