1884-P VAM-13

Description

Discovered by Marc Serafine in February 2004, the 1884-P Morgan Dollar VAM-13 is classified III212 C3a and features three independent diagnostics: Doubled 18 Left, a Far Date, and a Die Gouge above the first U in UNUM. On the obverse, the 1 in the date is strongly doubled with spikes at the top left, left of the top crossbar, left of the bottom crossbar, and below the bottom crossbar — the most prominent attribute. The first 8 is slightly doubled at the top inside of the upper loop. The date as a whole is set further right than normal, placing it in the far date configuration. A diagonal die gouge runs above the first U in UNUM. The reverse is C3a. The 1884-P Morgan Dollar was struck in 90% silver at the Philadelphia Mint under George T. Morgan's design. The strongly spiked doubling on the 1, slight doubling on the first 8, far date position, and the obverse die gouge above UNUM together establish VAM-13 as a multi-feature variety within the Van Allen-Mallis classification system.
