Description

The thirteenth sub-variety under the VAM-8 parent, the 1884-P Morgan Dollar VAM-8.13 records another far date positioning — sharing the same fundamental rightward date shift that characterizes all VAM-8 sub-varieties, but representing a distinct die combination or die state that separates it from VAM-8.12 and the other eleven sub-varieties in the family. Distinguishing between adjacent sub-varieties within a single parent VAM requires careful examination of secondary die markers: polishing lines, die scratches, clash marks, or progressive die wear features that differ between dies even when the primary characteristic (far date) remains visually similar. The obverse die is classified as III2 8, the same type designation as VAM-8.12, but the specific working die or its deterioration state provides the diagnostic separation. The reverse is again C3a — a normal die — meaning attribution depends exclusively on obverse characteristics. Thirteen sub-varieties under a single parent demonstrates how many working dies the Philadelphia Mint consumed during 1884 production, each inheriting the far date characteristic from the same hub but developing individual die markers through use. Struck in 90% silver at 26.73 grams. Compare die markers carefully against VAM-8.12 to confirm attribution to this specific sub-variety.
