Error
Description
Discovered by Mark Kimpton in January 2004, the 1884-P VAM-8B Morgan Dollar is classified as 8B III28 - C3a and features a far date placement with a clashed obverse showing a partial incuse "n" from the reverse inscription "In" positioned next to Liberty's neck. This clashed impression distinguishes the obverse die from that used for VAM-8A, confirming it as a separate die. VAM-8B represents the late die state of VAM-8.2, meaning collectors can trace the progression from the earlier VAM-8.2 through die deterioration to this terminal stage. The C3a reverse die classification helps place this variety within the broader 1884 Philadelphia die marriage network. As a regular strike issue, the clash marks should be examined in the field area adjacent to Liberty's portrait, where the incuse letter fragment transferred during an unobstructed die contact. Far date positioning combined with the clashed "n" makes this a two-feature attribution.
