1884-CC VAM-8

Description

Discovered by Leonard Hinckley in February 1974, the 1884-CC VAM-8 Morgan Dollar carries the classification III2 1 - C3d (CC Tilted Left). The reverse (C3d) features a large CC mintmark tilted to the left — a mintmark position variation where the Carson City double-C punch was applied at an angle to the left of vertical rather than perfectly upright, creating a visible lean that distinguishes this die from normal-position CC specimens. The VAMWorld commentary raises important attribution considerations: this variety's existence is questionable, described as likely an "empty nest" after more detailed descriptions were created for 1884-CC VAM-3, VAM-3A, VAM-10, and particularly VAM-10A, suggesting that VAM-8 may have been superseded by more precisely defined varieties from the same die pair. The notes confirm that the exact same die pair produced VAM-8, VAM-10, and VAM-10A, meaning these three catalog numbers represent different die states or differently described features of a single die marriage rather than separate die pairs. Additionally, the same reverse die was used for both VAM-8 and VAM-10. George T. Morgan designed this silver dollar, struck at the Carson City Mint in 1884 in 90% silver at 26.73 grams with a 38.1 mm diameter. The Carson City Mint, operating in Nevada from 1870 to 1893, holds a special place in numismatic lore because of its relatively low mintages and Western frontier heritage. The 1884-CC had a mintage of approximately 1.14 million pieces, many of which survived in Treasury vaults and were later released in the GSA sales of the 1970s and 1980s. Leonard Hinckley's 1974 discovery predates much of the systematic VAM cataloging that would later refine and potentially reclassify this variety's status within the 1884-CC die marriage family.
