Description

A doubled CC mintmark — with the first C doubled at the top inside and bottom left outside and the second C doubled at the right inside — combined with a doubled 18 and a date set further right than normal define VAM-5 for the 1884-CC Carson City Morgan Dollar, catalogued III2 5 C3c: CC/CC. Carson City Morgan Dollars carry a consistent premium among collectors owing to the historic Nevada mint's relatively modest output compared to Philadelphia and San Francisco, and 1884-CC is a date widely collected in both circulated and mint-state grades. The obverse III2 5 die shows 18 doubled to the left with the date placed further right than normal. Reverse C3c carries the repunched CC mintmark with doubling on both C punches. Discovered by George Mallis — co-creator with Leroy Van Allen of the VAM attribution system — in June 1965, VAM-5 is among the foundational Carson City Morgan Dollar VAMs catalogued in the original research era. Collectors spotting the extensive CC mintmark doubling will find this variety readily identifiable under low magnification.
