1884-CC VAM-2

Description

George Mallis identified this die marriage in June 1965, establishing VAM-2 for the 1884 Carson City Mint Morgan Dollar under classification 2 III2 2 C3b (Doubled 18 Top) with die pair 177. Struck in 90% silver at the Carson City Mint in Nevada, which operated from 1870 to 1893 producing coins from Comstock Lode silver, the CC mint mark makes this variety particularly collectible. The obverse shows the 1 doubled above its upper point and lower crossbar, while the first 8 is doubled to the left outside, with a die break across the bottom of the date digits appearing on some specimens. On the reverse, the first C of the CC mint mark is doubled on the left inside. The date doubling on the 1 and first 8 provides obverse diagnostics in the lower portrait area, while the doubled first C of the mint mark adds a reverse pickup point. The reverse die was also used for 1884-CC VAM-6, establishing a shared reverse relationship that documents Carson City Mint die usage across multiple marriages.
