Description

Pre-cud varieties document die deterioration at the stage preceding complete segment separation — cracks have propagated far enough that striking pressure displaces metal into the fracture zone, producing raised lines on the coin, but before any piece of the die has broken away. On this 1883 Indian Head cent, the condition is advanced: the primary crack runs from 4 o'clock to 7 o'clock on the reverse rim, with both prongs splitting inward into the wreath and extending northward toward each other, suggesting imminent die separation. Additional cracks appear at the 8 o'clock and 10 o'clock positions, with further cracking in the right side of the shield. Simultaneous failure across multiple areas indicates extensive mechanical stress with multiple concurrent fracture points. Indian Head cents were struck in bronze beginning in 1864 and designed by James Barton Longacre. The 1883 date is readily available in circulated grades, but error and variety collectors seek examples with dramatic die-failure documentation like this multi-zone pre-cud system, which records the die at a precise and irreversible stage of its working life. Both die cracks split into the wreath and extend northward toward each other. Additional die cracks are visible at the 8 o'clock and 10 o'clock positions, as well as in the right side of the shield. The extensive die cracking across multiple areas of the reverse indicates this die was significantly deteriorated and near the end of its useful life, with multiple failure points developing simultaneously.
