Description
This 1883 Indian Head Cent displays a pre-cud on the reverse running from the 1 o'clock to 3 o'clock position, accompanied by a secondary die crack on the top left of the shield. A pre-cud represents an advanced stage of die deterioration where die cracks have progressed to the rim and are on the verge of breaking through to form a full cud, but the fractured die piece has not yet separated — making it a transitional die state that documents the moment just before catastrophic die failure would produce the featureless raised blob characteristic of a complete cud. The distinction between a pre-cud and a full cud is diagnostically important: pre-cuds retain full design detail within the cracked area because the die fragment remains in place, while full cuds show a raised featureless area where the die piece has fallen away. The secondary die crack on the top left of the shield provides additional evidence of the die's advancing structural deterioration, as multiple crack systems developing simultaneously indicate widespread fatigue across the die face. The Indian Head Cent was designed by James B. Longacre, struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 1883 in bronze composition (95% copper, 5% tin and zinc) weighing 3.11 grams with a 19.05 mm diameter. The 1883 date falls within the mature production period of the Indian Head series (1859-1909). The 1 o'clock to 3 o'clock position of the pre-cud spans a quadrant of the reverse rim that encompasses portions of the wreath design, and the crack system's progression from initial fracture through pre-cud stage toward eventual full cud formation documents the physics of die steel failure under the cyclic loading conditions of high-speed coin production.
