1883-CC VAM-2

Description

Discovered by Martin Field in June 1981, the 1883-CC VAM-2 carries classification 2 III2 1 - C3b (Slanted CC, Doubled C) at rarity 180. Struck at the Carson City Mint in Nevada — among the most collectible mintmarks in all of American numismatics — this 90% silver Morgan Dollar commands the premium that CC issues consistently attract from collectors drawn to the Comstock Lode provenance. The reverse, designated C3b, features the large V CC mint mark set at a slant with the left C positioned high. Both C letters show interior polishing marks, and the left C is doubled on its left inside edge. Slight doubling also appears on designer George T. Morgan's initial M and the top inside of the wreath bow. Early die states exhibit heavy die polishing around the eagle and wreath, evidence of aggressive die maintenance during production. The Carson City Mint operated from 1870 to 1893, and its limited output relative to Philadelphia, San Francisco, and New Orleans ensures that every CC Morgan carries a scarcity premium. The slanted CC orientation on VAM-2 distinguishes it from the more common straight or tilted CC positions seen on other 1883-CC die marriages.
