1882-P VAM-22A

Description

Discovered by John Baumgart in October 2004, the 1882 Philadelphia Morgan Dollar VAM-22A is cataloged as Doubled 8-2, Clashed Obverse n, with the designation 22A III2 21 C3a (179). The obverse, Die III2 Position 21, preserves a clashed die impression showing a partial incuse bottom right arc of the lowercase n from the reverse's "In" inscription visible near Liberty's neck — a transfer occurring when the dies struck each other without a planchet. The reverse is classified as C3a, a normal die. This variety represents a later die state of the 1882-P VAM-22 die pair number 1, establishing it as a stage progression within the VAM-22 family. The clashed n near Liberty's neck distinguishes VAM-22A from its parent, which shares the doubled 8-2 characteristics but lacks clash evidence. The doubled digits indicate secondary impressions during die preparation, while the clash documents a separate in-press event after the die entered production. Together, these features record two distinct categories of die anomaly on a single obverse.
