1882-P VAM-13

Description

Discovered by Martin Field in November 1978, this Philadelphia Morgan dollar is cataloged as VAM-13 with classification III2 13 and a C3a reverse, formally titled Doubled 188. The obverse displays doubling concentrated on the first three date digits: the 1 is faintly doubled below the top crossbar, the first 8 is faintly doubled at the bottom left outside and top left inside of the upper loop and at the bottom right outside of the lower loop, and the second 8 shows doubling at the left outside of the upper loop and faintly at the bottom outside of the lower loop. The reverse C3a die is described as a normal die without distinctive features. Collectors sometimes confuse this variety with VAM-19 when the identifying wing scratch is absent, and the VAMWorld reference specifically notes that specimens lacking that scratch should be checked against the VAM-19 listing. As one of the earlier Morgan dollar VAM discoveries from the late 1970s, VAM-13 holds a place in the history of the systematic cataloging effort that would eventually document hundreds of Philadelphia Mint die pairings across the Morgan series.
