1882-P VAM-22.1

Description

Originally discovered by Larry Briggs in April 2000 and subsequently revised in 2008 and 2014, this Philadelphia Mint Morgan Dollar variety displays doubled date digits and evolving die surface conditions. The left 8 shows doubling as a short arc at the top inside of the lower loop, while the 2 is slightly doubled on the right side of the upper ball. Some specimens exhibit die flakes and polishing lines in the loops of the 2, indicating progressive die deterioration. The top of the Phrygian cap is also slightly doubled. Classified as 22.1 III2 21 with a C3a reverse, the primary obverse die marker consists of X-shaped polishing lines at the bottom of the Y in LIBERTY. An earlier state of this obverse die, which carried die scratches on Liberty's face, was reassigned as the obverse of VAM-1 in its 1F die pair configuration. VAM-22.1 represents the mid-to-late obverse die state of VAM-30, linking these varieties in a documented die state progression that aids in understanding the chronological use of this particular obverse die at the Philadelphia Mint.
