1882-P VAM-18

Description

Discovered by Martin Field in July 1982, this Philadelphia Mint Morgan Dollar is designated VAM-18 under Classification III2 18, C3a, documenting a Doubled Date. On the obverse, the entire date is doubled: the 1 is doubled slightly on the upper right surface of the vertical shaft, the first 8 is doubled at the left outside of the upper loop, the second 8 is doubled at the top outside of the upper loop and upper left outside of the lower loop, and the 2 is doubled at the top outside of the upper loop. The reverse is a normal C3a die. Struck in 90% silver and 10% copper at the Philadelphia Mint, the 1882 Morgan Dollar was produced in substantial quantities during the Bland-Allison Act era. Martin Field's 1982 discovery of VAM-18 identified doubling across all four digits of the date, providing multiple diagnostic points for attribution. The doubling is most readily visible on the first 8 at the left outside of its upper loop, where the secondary impression creates a noticeable shelf effect under magnification.
