Error
Description
Discovered by Martin Field in October 1981, 1882-P VAM-17 is catalogued as 17 III2 17 · C3a — Doubled Date — with an R-5 rarity rating, estimating 31 to 100 examples known. The obverse III2 17 shows the entire date doubled, with a secondary date impression slightly to the left of the primary. The reverse C3a is a normal die with a short die crack running from the rim to the top of the right O of DOLLAR as the primary die marker. The full-date doubling — all four digits shifted left — is the defining diagnostic and distinguishes VAM-17 from the many partial-date doubled die varieties in the 1882-P Morgan census. The 1882 Philadelphia Morgan dollar was struck in 90% silver; Philadelphia produced no mintmark on its Morgan dollars, making obverse die characteristics the sole attribution basis for isolating specific VAM pairings. At R-5, VAM-17 is among the scarcer confirmed 1882-P die marriages, and Field's 1981 discovery predates the widespread digital census tools that later expanded VAM attribution significantly.
