Description

Designated VAM-1F1 (revised in 2014), this 1882 Philadelphia Morgan dollar is classified III2 1 with a C3a reverse and bears the formal title Clashed Obverse n G. Discovered in February 2008, the variety carries a rarity rating of I-2, R-6, though R-3 has been suggested as a possible revision. The obverse die shows a clashed impression where the edge of the G from God and a shallow n from In on the reverse transferred onto the area next to Liberty's neck edge during a die clash event. Light polishing lines appear on the face in various directions, likely applied to remove fine rust pits, and this obverse was formerly cataloged as VAM-22 before reclassification. The reverse C3a die is a normal die of the C3 type without distinctive features. Two important die pairing notes accompany this listing: the exact same reverse die was used for VAM-1B, and the die pair itself is identical to VAM-1F2, meaning the distinction between 1F1 and 1F2 rests on die state progression rather than different dies. Collectors examining the neck area under magnification should look for the incuse letter transfers to confirm this attribution.
