Description

Discovered by George Mallis in July 1964 — co-creator of the VAM system alongside Leroy Van Allen — the 1880-P VAM-4 Doubled 0 and Dash Morgan Dollar displays two diagnostic features: the final 0 in the date 1880 is strongly doubled at the top left and right bottom inside the left side, and a dash appears below the second 8 in the date. Cataloged as 4 III2 3 - C3a, this variety's obverse die (III2 3) carries the doubled zero and dash that define the pairing, while the reverse die (C3a) is a normal die without significant varieties. The doubled zero is a hubbing anomaly where the date numeral received two impressions at slightly different positions, and the dash below the second 8 may represent a die scratch, die gouge, or remnant of a repunched date element. George Mallis's discovery of this variety predates the formal publication of the VAM reference work, demonstrating the depth of Morgan Dollar research that was already underway in the 1960s. The 1880 Philadelphia Mint Morgan Dollar had a substantial mintage of 12.6 million pieces, making it a common date where die variety distinctions provide meaningful collecting opportunities. The Doubled 0 and Dash combination creates a distinctive attribution profile that collectors can verify under moderate magnification, checking both the zero's inner contour for secondary impression lines and the area below the second 8 for the characteristic dash mark.
