1880-P VAM-3

Description

Discovered by Leroy Van Allen in March 1973 — co-creator of the VAM classification system — the 1880-P VAM-3 Morgan Dollar carries the designation III2 12 · C3a (Doubled 80 and Dash) with die pairing number 180. The obverse (III2 12) presents a complex doubling pattern on the date's final two digits: the second 8 is doubled slightly at the very bottom, on the lower left outside of the upper loop, and at the top on the left and right sides, while the 0 is strongly doubled at the top left and right outside and inside lower right. Additionally, a faint long dash appears well below the bottom of the second 8 — an anomalous linear mark whose origin may relate to die damage or an artifact of the hubbing process. The reverse (C3a) is classified as a normal die. The combination of multi-point doubling on both the 8 and the 0, each showing displacement in different directions, suggests the hub was shifted along a complex vector during the secondary impression, producing doubling that varies in direction and intensity across the relatively small area of the date. The Morgan Dollar was designed by George T. Morgan and struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 1880 in 90% silver at 26.73 grams with a 38.1 mm diameter and a reeded edge. Leroy Van Allen's discovery of this variety in 1973, during the foundational period of VAM cataloging, places it among the earlier documented Morgan Dollar die marriages. The 1880-P had a mintage of approximately 12.6 million pieces. The strong doubling on the 0 — described as visible at multiple positions around the digit's circumference — makes this the most prominent diagnostic feature, while the mysterious dash below the second 8 adds a distinctive secondary marker.
