Error
Description
VAM-15B on the 1880 Philadelphia Morgan Dollar was discovered by James Cerny in April 2011 and is catalogued as 15B, obverse III2 15, reverse C3a, with the full attribution: Doubled 880, Die Break Lower Cap, Clashed Obverse n and st. The date carries doubling across the three rightmost digits. The die break at the lower cap is a structural failure at the Phrygian cap of Liberty's portrait. The clash marks are the most compelling diagnostics: a partial incuse n from the word "in" on the reverse appears next to Liberty's neck on the obverse, and a partial incuse st from the reverse transfers to the obverse field as well — two separate letter fragments from a die clash event in which the obverse and reverse dies contacted each other without a planchet.
