Description

Discovered by George Mallis in June 1972 and revised in 2011, VAM-15 is classified as 15 (revised) III2 15, C3a (Doubled 880) (179). The obverse shows the left 8 doubled at the lower left outside of the lower loop, the right 8 doubled at the top right and left outside, and the 0 doubled at the left inside. The reverse is a normal C3a die. George Mallis is the "M" in the VAM classification system, having co-created this foundational framework for Morgan Dollar die variety attribution alongside Leroy Van Allen. His early discoveries like this 1880 Philadelphia issue helped establish the systematic approach to cataloging Morgan Dollar varieties that collectors rely on today. The doubling confined to the 880 portion of the date makes this variety identifiable with moderate magnification, as the shifted digits create visible separation lines around the loops and curves of these three numerals.
