Description

Discovered by Bill Fivaz in October 1973, the 1880-P Morgan Dollar VAM-14 is classified as III2 14, C3a (Doubled First 8), die pair 180, with rarity ratings of I-3 R-4. The obverse shows the first 8 in the date doubled strongly at the bottom right outside, providing a clearly visible diagnostic for this early-discovery variety. Two important catalog notes accompany this listing: first, VAM-14 is probably a listing error in the VAM reference book as C3e, and the reverse type should be assumed to be C3a, a normal die of type C3. Second, the LVA (Leroy Van Allen) noted in August 2011 that VAM-14 is possibly a duplicate listing of VAM-17. These unresolved questions about reverse classification and potential duplication make VAM-14 a variety where collectors should exercise particular care in attribution, cross-checking against both VAM-17 and the corrected C3a reverse designation.
