Error
Description
Discovered by Leonard Hinckley in February 1974, this I-2 proof Morgan Dollar holds singular importance: its reverse die was used for all proof coinage across 1879 and 1880, making it the key to identifying circulated proofs that have lost their mirror surfaces. Designated 13 III2 13 C3a (Doubled 1) with rarity 180, the obverse shows the 1 doubled at top left of upper crossbar and slightly at top left of bottom crossbar. The reverse die is identified by two bulges on D of DOLLAR and a nearly vertical die scratch above the eagle's right foot. This die has never been confirmed on any business strike during its three years of service, making it a definitive proof diagnostic. For collectors of circulated proof Morgans — coins that entered circulation and lost their proof surfaces — these reverse markers provide the most reliable confirmation method.
