Description

Carrying both the Hot 50 Morgan VAM and Elite Clashed Dollar designations, 1880-P VAM-11A is among the most sought-after die varieties in the Philadelphia Mint Morgan dollar series. Discovered in May 2004 by Mark Kimpton, this variety is catalogued as III2 10 C3a with the attribution Doubled 880, 8/7, Clashed Obverse st. The obverse shows a clashed die with a faint partial incuse impression of "st" from TRUST transferred into the right hair vee of the lower hair edge. A very faint impression of "n" from IN also appears next to the Liberty head neck. The reverse is a normal C3a die. The Hot 50 designation identifies this as one of fifty most desirable Morgan dollar varieties; the Elite Clashed Dollar designation recognizes the quality of the clash transfer. Clashed dies occur when obverse and reverse dies strike each other without a planchet, pressing incuse mirror images onto the opposing face. Morgan dollars are 90% silver, designed by George T. Morgan. VAM-11A is a later die state of the parent 1880-P VAM-11. The doubled date, 8/7 overdate element, and high-quality "st" clash transfer in the hair vee make this a standout piece for VAM specialists and clashed die collectors alike.
