Description

Originally cataloged as VAM-11A under classification III2 1 - C3c (182), this 1879-S Morgan Dollar featured an S/S Left repunched mint mark with die file lines on the tail feathers. Discovered by Ken1793, it was reclassified and eliminated in 2010, becoming VAM-12A. The obverse carried the III2 1 designation with an S mint mark punched left of the primary position, showing a secondary S impression displaced leftward. The reverse, classified C3c, displayed heavy vertical die file lines below the right tail feathers and above the arrow head shafts — evidence of Mint workers filing the die surface to remove clash marks or other surface imperfections. Rated I-3 for interest and R-5 for rarity, placing the estimated population at 1 to 30 specimens. Collectors researching this variety should now reference VAM-12A for current attribution status. =1879-S VAM-11A S/S Left, Die File Line Tail Feathers= Discovery Coin by Ken1793 Elininated 2010 - became VAM-12A 11A III2 1 - C3c (S/S Left, Die File Line Tail Feathers) (182) I-3 R-5 Reverse C3c - Heavy vertical die file lines below right tail feathers and above arrow head shafts.
