Description

Classified as an 1879/1 overdate, this repunched date on the 1879 San Francisco Mint Morgan Dollar shows repunching of the 1 on the lower area north of the primary numeral. The variety is cross-referenced to three separate VAM die marriages: VAM-15, VAM-20, and VAM-73, with the pictured example representing the VAM-15 die pairing. This triple VAM cross-reference indicates that the same obverse die — bearing the repunched date — was paired with at least three different reverse dies during its working life, creating distinct die marriages tracked independently in the VAM catalog. Attributed by the Wexler Team under Wexler Variety ID 1879-S $1 WRPD-001, the variety also shares its reverse with WRPM-001, an S/S Southeast repunched mintmark. Obverse die markers include a die scratch running south-southeast from the lower center of the last U in PLURIBUS to the bonnet. The reverse carries a north-south die scratch to the right side of the first olive from center on the left branch. These cross-references across the Wexler and VAM systems demonstrate how a single remarkable obverse die generated multiple collectible die marriages.
