1863 Indian Head Cent Repunched Date FS-301 Snow-2

Description

A repunched date is visible on this 1863 Indian Head cent. A repunched date occurs when one or more digits of the date are punched into the die more than once in slightly different positions, leaving traces of the earlier punching on struck coins. In this case the 863 of the date can be seen repunched inside the 863. This variety is cataloged as FS-301 and Snow-2. The 1863 Indian Head cent was the last copper-nickel issue before the mid-1864 transition to bronze. Civil War-era hoarding meant dies were run far beyond normal use, producing an unusually high number of die breaks and deterioration errors.
