Description

Cataloged by Cuds on Coins, the PC-1c-1879-02R is the second documented reverse pre-cud for the 1879 Indian Head Cent — a date from the lower-mintage middle period of the series. Pre-cuds develop when a rim crack forms on the die but does not progress to the point of fragment separation, creating a thin raised line on struck coins that extends inward from the edge into the wreath design. The '02R' designation indicates this is the second pre-cud cataloged for this date on the reverse die. The 1879 Indian Head Cent had a Philadelphia Mint production of approximately 16.2 million pieces — lower than the high-mintage years of the early 1900s — making die varieties from this date somewhat less frequently encountered. James B. Longacre's enduring Indian Head design, now in its twentieth year of production by 1879, continued to exhibit the die stress patterns that produced pre-cuds, cuds, and other rim break varieties throughout the series' half-century run.
