Description
This 1879 Indian Head Cent displays a pre-cud die crack on the reverse spanning from approximately 3:30 to 5:00 on the clock face — a substantial arc covering roughly 45 degrees of the coin's circumference. A pre-cud represents a significant die crack at the rim that has not yet progressed to a full cud break — the die steel has fractured but the broken section remains in place, producing a raised crack line on the struck coin rather than the featureless raised blob characteristic of a complete cud. Pre-cuds are important to die-crack progression collectors because they document the transitional stage between normal die cracking and full die failure, and specimens may exist in varying states from the same die as the crack widened over subsequent strikes until the die fragment eventually broke free. The 3:30 to 5:00 clock position places this crack on the lower right portion of the reverse, affecting the area between the wreath design and the rim. The Indian Head Cent was designed by James Barton Longacre, featuring Liberty wearing a Native American feathered headdress on the obverse and an oak wreath with shield on the reverse. The 1879 issue was struck at the Philadelphia Mint in bronze composition (95% copper, 5% tin and zinc), weighing 3.11 grams at 19.05 mm diameter with a plain edge. The 1879 date saw a significant increase in cent production compared to earlier years of the decade, with a mintage of approximately 16.2 million. Die cracks and pre-cuds were relatively common on 19th-century coinage due to the metallurgical limitations of die steel and the demands of high-volume production. Collectors interested in this pre-cud should examine the reverse rim area between 3:30 and 5:00 for the raised crack line, which may appear as a continuous or slightly intermittent raised ridge following the die's fracture path.
