Description
1878-S VAM-8 Engraved Wing Feather Discovered by George Mallis, March 1968. Revised 2006. Revised to separate out die pairs, October 2023. This coin is a Top 30 1878-S Variety. 8(revised) II 55 · B2k (Engraved Wing Feather) (184) Obverse II 55– Curved die scratch in front of forehead & horizontal die scratch between ends of lower two cotton leaves. Fourth right star broken. Same die as 1878-S VAM-28. Reverse B2k– Feather engraved between eagle’s right wing and leg. Engraved bars between eagle’s right wing and body plus engraved patch in middle of eagle’s right wing on earlier die states. R in Trust not broken. Die chip on lower right serif of E in UNITED on later die states. DPIS – In 1878 dates were part of the master die so there is no variation in position. Emission Sequence Obverse: Reverse: Comments: Obverse shared with 1878-S VAM-28. Reverse shared with 1878-S VAM-85. Former VAM 8.2 now 1878-S VAM-121.
