1878-S Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-002
Error
Description
A combination variety on the 90% silver Morgan Dollar, this 1878-S WDDR-002 pairs moderate Class II doubling on the reverse with an obverse doubled die cataloged independently as WDDO-005. The reverse doubling shows toward the rim on all letters of USA and ONE DOLLAR, with additional doubling on the outside edges of the left olive leaves and very light doubling on the outside edge of the right wing feathers. Obverse die markers include a broken left point on the fourth star on the right and a strong die scratch on the right side of the 7 in the date. The reverse shows a split upper right serif on the S mintmark, and the leaf of the left olive branch in the third group is abraded away. The dual doubled die attribution makes this first-year San Francisco Morgan Dollar especially appealing to variety collectors who prize combination varieties for documenting two independent hubbing errors on a single coin.
