1878-S Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-004

Description

Cataloged by the Wexler Team with photographs by Brian Allen and submitted by John A. Wexler, this first-year San Francisco Morgan Dollar pairs a doubled die obverse with reverse WDDR-001, creating a dual-variety coin. Cross-referenced as VAM 5. Die markers on the obverse include a light die crack from the base of the bust into the field above the date and heavy N/S die polish lines over the entire obverse. The reverse shows a broken upper bar of R in TRUST, a reengraved tail feather between the eagle's right leg and wing, strong N/S die polish lines over the lower and sides of the reverse, and a long NW/SE die scratch from the eagle's left wing top to M of AMERICA. Struck in 90% silver and 10% copper at 26.73 grams and 38.1 mm, George T. Morgan's inaugural 1878 design makes first-year varieties especially sought by collectors.
