1878-S VAM-29 Tripled Liberty, Doubled Nostril & Eyelid, Sagging Jaw, Engraved Wing Feather Discovered by Leroy Van Allen, December 1979. Revised 2010. This coin is a Top 30 1878-S Variety. 29(revised) II 17 · B2q (Tripled LIBERTY, Doubled Nostril & Eyelid, Sagging Jaw, Engraved Wing Feather) (184) Obverse II 17– LIBERTY tripled to left and right. Doubled eyelid, nostril, hair above date top cotton leaves and US UNUM. Tripled front and bottom of chin. 18-8 slightly doubled at bottom outside. Both 8's doubled at top left inside of upper loop, possibly from die polishing. Bottom of jaw has more rounded appearance from engraving lines to eliminate doubled profile. First known case of engraving on Morgan dollar obverse die. Diagonal die gouge at top left of first U in PLURIBUS. Slightly beveled field above PLUR. Fourth right star broken. Reverse B2q– Feather engraved between eagle’s right wing and leg. Fully struck specimens show raised dots of rusted die on UNITED letters and leaves at top of left wreath. R in Trust not broken. Hub doubling on lower arrow head and tops of ONE DO towards coin center. DPIS – In 1878 dates were part of the master die so there is no variation in position. Emission Sequence Obverse: Reverse: Comments: 1878-S VAM-29 and 1878-S VAM-31 share the same obverse die. They are the only examples of engraving on the obverse. The obverse has doubled eyelid and nostril, and die file lines along the jaw edge, that gives a sagging jaw appearance. VAM-31 is distinguished by a diagonal die polish line right of the eagle's neck in the vee between the neck and wing.
