Description
1878-S VAM-23 Die Flakes Hair, Doubled Profile, Engraved Wing Feather, S/S Left Discovered by Bill Fivaz, November 1977. 23(revised) II 43 · B2y (Doubled Profile, Engraved Wing Feather, S/S Left) ( ? ) Obverse II 43– Liberty head profile slightly doubled from front of LIBERTY band, front edge of hair, nose, lips and chin. Slight doubling on PLU-BUS UNUM towards rim, top of Phrygian cap, right wheat leaf and LIBERTY on right side. Die marker - Rough flaked surface of hair above second right star. Reverse B2y– Feather engraved between eagle’s right wing and leg. III S mint mark re-punched with short diagonal line at top middle inside of upper loop and curved line within lower loop. R in Trust partially broken. Eagle’s left wing slightly over polished in center. DPIS – In 1878 dates were part of the master die so there is no variation in position. Emission Sequence Obverse: Reverse: Comments: Same reverse die as 1878-S VAM-37. Same obverse die as 1878-S VAM-34, 1878-S VAM34A.
