1878-S VAM-16 Die Scratch on Wing, Engraved Wing Feather Discovered by Guy Messing, May 1973. This is a Top 30 1878-S Die Variety. 16 II 12 • B2o (Die Scratch on Wing, Engraved Wing Feather) (184) Obverse II 12 - E PLURIB letters in motto dbled on right side & some on bottom. 18-8 dbled slightly on bottom. Number 3 stars on right & left doubled. LIBERTY dbled slightly to left. Reverse B2o- Vertical scratch through lower part of eagle's right wing. R in TRUST not Broken. DPIS – In 1878 dates were part of the master die so there is no variation in position. ;Emission Sequence :Obverse: :Reverse: 'Comments: # Formerly VAM-1A. # VAM's [[1878-S VAM-16, [[1878-S VAM-16A, [[1878-S VAM-20 & [[1878-S VAM-28 share the same reverse. # Gouge in field from [[1878-S VAM-16A nearly polished away along with minor clash mark.
