Description
This 1874 Indian Head Cent exhibits two distinct pre-cud die cracks on the reverse, positioned on opposite sides of the die face — one running from approximately the 3:00 to 4:00 position and the second from approximately 8:00 to 10:00 on the clock-face orientation system used to describe die crack locations. Pre-cuds are die cracks that have developed at the rim area and are progressing toward becoming full cuds — complete die breaks where a fragment of the die separates entirely, leaving a raised featureless blob on struck coins — but have not yet reached that critical failure point. The presence of two separate pre-cud cracks on opposite sides of the same reverse die is diagnostically significant because it indicates that die fatigue was developing symmetrically across the die face, with multiple independent stress fractures propagating simultaneously from different rim segments rather than a single localized failure zone. Each crack represents a different potential future cud break, and coins struck from this die in later states might show one or both cracks having progressed to full cud status. The Indian Head Cent was designed by James Barton Longacre, featuring Liberty in a feathered headdress on the obverse and a wreath encircling ONE CENT on the reverse. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 1874, the coin is composed of 95% copper and 5% tin and zinc, weighing 3.11 grams with a diameter of 19.05 mm. The symmetrical distribution of the two pre-cuds on opposite die quadrants suggests the die steel was experiencing relatively uniform stress degradation across its full diameter, rather than the localized failure more commonly seen in dies that develop a single isolated pre-cud or cud break.
