A prominent pre-cud die crack traverses the reverse of this 1874 Indian Head cent, extending from approximately 2:30 to 4:00 on the clock face. Pre-cuds represent an intermediate stage of die deterioration in which a substantial crack has developed at the rim but the die metal has not yet broken away to produce the raised, featureless blob characteristic of a full cud break. On this example, the crack is well advanced along the lower-right quadrant of the reverse, spanning roughly ninety degrees of the rim. Collectors prize pre-cud specimens because they document the progressive failure of a die before its terminal state, offering insight into Mint production practices and die longevity during the mid-1870s. Indian Head cents of this era were struck in bronze at the Philadelphia Mint, and significant die cracks at the rim are less frequently encountered than minor interior breaks.
